Don’t lose sleep over ageing eyes – there are now many anti-ageing eye treatments available, including the non-surgical eyelid lift! Read on to learn the secrets of this incredible scalpel-free eye lift, plus five other cosmetic treatments that will rejuvenate the eyes for a youthful, well-rested appearance.
An expressive area of the face with fine, fragile skin, the eye region is quick to show signs of ageing. Sun, pollution, mindless rubbing, makeup removal and intrinsic ageing all contribute to a breakdown of collagen, elastin and fat, causing the eye area to droop rather sadly. There are, however, some very effective cosmetic interventions that can help – starting with a non-surgical eye lift.
1. ACCOR PLASMA PEN NON-SURGICAL EYELID LIFT
New to Privée Clinic, the ACCOR Plasma Pen instantly tightens and lifts the upper eyelids for a more youthful, refreshed and open-eyed look. For those wanting to avoid going under the knife, this anti-ageing eye treatment can deliver similar results to a surgical blepharoplasty (eyelid lift).
German-engineered, the ACCOR Plasma pen harnesses the skin tightening and lifting effects of plasma energy. The 4th state of matter, plasma is a super ionised gas that can conduct a large and sustained electrical current. Examples of plasma include the sun, fire and lightning bolts.
The first device to utilise a low frequency delivery of the plasma arc, the Accor Plasma Pen creates an ionised plasma arc (similar to a lightning bolt) which projects onto the skin surface. The plasma arc instantly vaporises a point of skin at the required position, tightening the immediate surrounding area. Instant contraction and tightening of skin fibres results in micro-scabs which gradually fall off to reveal tighter, rejuvenated skin.
Enabling a wider and shallower treatment imprint than traditional thermal only devices, the Plasma Pen results in a greater tightening effect, quicker healing, and less down time. The treatment can result in tighter skin, lifted eyes, removal of bags and hooded eyelid skin, and a more radiant, youthful look. At Privée, the Plasma Pen treatment is offered for tightening and rejuvenation of the upper eyelids.
Depending on the severity of skin laxity, 1-2 treatments are generally required, and the full effect of the treatment is visible after 12 weeks. A second tightening and lifting treatment may be performed 12 weeks after the initial treatment.
Topical anaesthetic cream is applied prior to the ACCOR Plasma Pen Non-Surgical Eyelid Lift. The procedure has minimal pain; however, you will experience a sensation of heat. Redness and swelling are expected immediately post-treatment. Dots will appear on the skin – these are tiny portions of ablated tissue which have formed into a scab. Scabs usually fall off on days 4-7. It is important not to pick the scabs or get them wet to prevent scarring.
The treatment causes inflammation, with swelling in the upper and lower eye area peaking on days 2-3. The amount of downtime varies between individuals, however for most people there is about 5 days downtime in which makeup cannot be worn. Once the scabs have fallen off, it is possible to resume normal activities and wear makeup to cover any residual redness.
2. ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS
Over time, the muscles around the brow and eyes become overactive, causing an excessive pulling down of the muscles in this area and the tissues surrounding it. Thankfully, anti-wrinkle injections can be used to achieve a dramatic lift to a drooping eye area.
Placing a neurotoxin superficially into the orbicularis occuli muscle (just under the eyebrow and lateral to the eye) and into the glabella (the frown lines) will relax the muscles which cause this drooping. This results in a lifting of the eyebrows and a fresh and rejuvenated appearance.
Anti-wrinkle injections can also be placed around the eyes to improve and soften the appearance of crow’s feet.
Anti-wrinkle injections will usually take 2-3 days to work, with optimal results seen after 10-14 days. Results will typically last 3-4 months. The injections are relatively painless and are over very quickly. A very fine needle is used to ensure maximal comfort
3. DERMAL FILLERS
As we age, we also start to lose fat from the temple, forehead and upper brow region. Hollow temples create shadows in all the wrong places, leading to a gaunt and aged appearance. Furthermore, loss of facial fat in these areas causes drooping of the eyes and eyelids.
The solution lies in replacing lost volume, which we can achieve with gel-based dermal fillers. Made from a volume-boosting sugar, dermal fillers injected into the temple and deep under the muscle on the brow can lift the eyebrows to create a more youthful look.
The tear trough (otherwise known as the eye bag) is another area that can be treated with dermal filler. Filler can be injected into this hollow area under the eyes with either a needle or a cannula to decrease the look of dark circles and camouflage bags.
At Privée, our technique of choice is to use a cannula as this minimises the risk of bruising and intravascular complications. A cannula is a metal instrument, similar to a long needle; however, it is blunt at the end rather than sharp. Instead of piercing through vessels as a needle would, it simply pushes them out of the way, thereby reducing unwanted side effects such as bruising and pain.
Dermal fillers are delivered with local anaesthetic, making it a relatively painless experience. Results are immediately visible, with best results seen approximately 1 week post treatment when the filler has settled into position and any swelling has resolved. In this area of the face, filler can be expected to last for approximately a year.
4. VENUS VIVA RADIOFREQUENCY RESURFACING
Another popular anti-ageing eye treatment is Venus Viva radio frequency resurfacing. For those concerned with fine lines, sagging skin and loss of elasticity around the eyes, the Venus Viva reduces the look of crepey and loose skin, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.
Venus Viva works by using a combination of needling with radio frequency energy to stimulate collagen and elastin to the under-eye area. We like to think of it as skin needling on steroids! The radio frequency causes a thermal reaction in the tissue, stimulating the body’s natural healing response and increasing collagen and elastin. After a Venus Viva RF resurfacing, you can expect tighter skin, a reduction in fine lines and a brighter, more radiant eye contour.
Safe for all skin types and tones, the Venus Viva RF resurfacing treatment has minimal pain, and downtime generally varies between 1-3 days depending on the treatment settings used.
5. VAMPIRE INJECTIONS
Don’t be put off by the name – Vampire Injections are another anti-ageing eye treatment that can have impressive results! 100% natural, the Vampire Facial involves utilising your own blood cells to boost collagen production for plumper, firmer skin. It’s works to improve the quality and texture of your own skin, with injections most frequently administered in the tough-to-treat eye area.
Vampire Injections are great for thickening and strengthening thin, crepey, sagging skin, and also help to reduce dark circles and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Very popular with those not wanting to go down the filler/ neurotoxin route (as well as individuals with allergies to muscle relaxants), Vampire Injections are also often used in combination with dermal filler.
The treatment involves drawing blood and spinning it in a centrifuge machine to separate red blood cells from plasma. The part of the blood containing valuable growth factors is then injected into the ageing area to boost collagen production.
As it relies on the quality of your own autologous blood, you must be in good health to have this treatment, and free from clotting conditions or blood cell disorders. It will also be far less effective for smokers.
For the eye area, 3 Vampire Injection treatments are usually required, 1 month apart, with a maintenance treatment once or twice a year.
6. SKIN NEEDLING
Our final anti-ageing eye treatment is skin needling. Professional micro-needling treatments can address skin laxity, undereye bags and lines and wrinkles. A pain-free treatment with minimal down time, skin needling is ideal for those seeking a natural, non-invasive solution to ageing eyes.
After application of a topical anaesthetic, a device with ultra-fine sterile needles is rolled over the skin, creating temporary miniscule punctures. The body’s natural healing response kicks in, triggering an increase in collagen production for firmer, smoother skin.
Safe and pain-free, collagen induction therapy (CIT) via skin needling is suitable for all skin types and skin tones. Immediate flushing and some sensitivity can be expected post treatment, with residual redness lasting up 48 hours.
For the eye area, expect a visible improvement from skin needling after 6-8 weeks (once collagen induction kicks in). For best results, 3 treatments will be required at 6-8 week intervals.
