INJECTABLES:

Excessive Sweating

Is excessive sweating interfering with your daily activities? Do you worry about wearing certain colours in case your friends see the unsightly wet patches?

For many people excessive sweating can be an embarrassing problem. Not only is it uncomfortable but the dreaded underarm sweat patch can turn a pleasurable social occasion into one fraught with anxiety. Previously the only solution to this common medical condition was high strength aluminium deodorant or surgical intervention. Now thanks to advancements in cosmetic medicine neurotoxins can be injected into the skin to eliminate this unsightly problem.

What Exactly is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the term given to the problem of excessive sweating. Up to 5% of the population suffer from this medical problem.

Sweating is a normal physiological phenomenon, which helps regulate body temperature by cooling the skin through evaporation. The brain detects a change in body temperature and sends a signal to the glands to produce sweat. In a person with hyperhidrosis the brain sends too many signals, which overstimulate the sweat glands leading to excessive sweating. Exercise, stressful situations and hot or spicy food can all stimulate the brain to respond in this manner.

How Is It Treated?

A grid like pattern is marked out on the underarms and injections of a neurotoxin are then placed superficially in the skin about 2cm apart over the area of the sweat glands. The whole procedure takes about 20mins.

How Long Does The Treatment Last?

Studies have shown that the median length of time for the treatment to last is 6.7 months. However some people may have a reduction in sweat, which lasts up to 1 year.

Are There Any Side Effects?

As with any treatment, there may be side effects. Most are uncommon but can range from:

  • Pain at the injection site
  • Redness and swelling
  • Bruising
  • Temporary arm weakness
  • Perceived increase in sweating in another body area
  • What Are The Contra-Indications?
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Neuromuscular disease
  • Certain medications
  • Allergy to neurotoxins
